Type 5 Manual Wheelchairs

Manual tilt wheelchairs for people who cannot shift their own weight, where pressure relief and postural support are the priority.

Choosing well

Type 5 is the Ontario Assistive Devices Program classification for a manual tilt wheelchair. The whole seat frame tilts backwards as one unit, keeping the hip and knee angles unchanged while shifting the person's weight off the sitting bones and onto the back of the chair.

That matters for someone who cannot shift their own weight. Anyone who sits still for long periods is at risk of pressure injuries, and the usual defence is to move, even slightly, every so often. A person who cannot do that independently needs the chair to do it for them, and tilt is the most effective way to achieve it. These chairs come with removable height adjustable arms, swing away footrests, anti-tippers and quick release axles.

Tilt is not the same as recline. Reclining opens the angle between the back and the seat, which can cause shearing against the skin and can leave someone slumped out of position. Tilting keeps the seated posture intact and simply changes its angle relative to the ground, which is why it is preferred where posture and skin protection both matter.

Chairs in this class are usually attendant pushed, though some are set up for self propelling, and many pair with a specialised seating system rather than a standard sling seat.

How these are ordered

Tilt chairs are specified around the person's posture, skin risk and how they transfer, usually alongside a seating assessment. The models below describe what each frame can do rather than one fixed set of measurements. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist is normally involved and determines which ADP category applies. ADP funds up to 75 percent of the approved price for eligible Ontario residents.
