Shower Chairs, Stools, and Accessories

Shower chairs, stools and swivel seats, plus paediatric bath chairs, so showering can be done seated and safely.

Choosing well

Sitting down to shower removes the two things that make showering dangerous: standing on a wet surface, and balancing while your eyes are closed or your arms are raised. For most people who feel unsteady in the shower, a seat is the whole solution.

Stool, chair, or chair with arms

A stool is a seat and nothing else. It takes the least space, suits a small shower cubicle, and works for someone who can balance well while seated and stand up unaided.

A chair with a back adds support behind, which matters more than people expect. Washing your hair means tilting your head back and closing your eyes, and that is when balance goes. A back also makes a longer shower comfortable rather than something to rush.

A chair with arms gives something to push up from when standing, and something to steady against while sitting down. If getting up from a low seat is difficult, arms are the feature that matters most.

Swivel seats

A swivel seat turns, so you can face the shower head, then turn to reach a tap or a shelf, without twisting your spine or shuffling your feet on a wet floor. Worth considering after hip surgery, or for anyone with a stiff back or poor trunk control.

Getting the height right

Most shower chairs adjust. Set the height so the person's feet rest flat on the floor with their knees at roughly a right angle. Too low and standing up is hard work; too high and the feet dangle, which is unstable.

Weight and width

Match the seat width to the person as well as the weight rating. A seat that is too narrow is uncomfortable and unstable; bariatric models are wider and reinforced throughout, not simply rated higher.

The thing people forget

A fixed overhead shower is aimed at someone standing. Seated, it sprays the wall. A handheld shower head is inexpensive and is what makes a seated wash actually work. We stock those alongside these chairs.

For children

Paediatric bath chairs are a different category again, supporting a child at an angle so a parent can wash with both hands. Tell us the child's height and weight and we will help you choose.
