Foldable Ramps

Folding and multifold portable ramps from 2 to 12 feet, for thresholds, steps and vehicles.

Choosing well

Portable ramps fold up and travel. They are for the steps and thresholds you meet occasionally rather than every day: a friend's front door, a restaurant with one step, a van, a holiday cottage, or a single step at home that does not justify a permanent ramp.

Choose the length by the rise, not by what fits in the car

This is the mistake that matters, and it is easy to make because the short ramps look reassuringly manageable.

Ramp length should be about one foot for every inch of rise. A single 7 inch step wants roughly a 6 foot ramp. A 12 inch rise wants about 12 feet.

Using a 2 foot ramp on a 12 inch step gives a slope of roughly 1 in 2. That is not a ramp, it is a launching pad: impossible to push up, and frightening or uncontrollable coming down.

Measure the rise first, then choose the ramp. If the right length will not fit in your car, the answer is usually a different solution rather than a shorter ramp.

When a steeper ramp is acceptable

Steeper than 1:12 is sometimes used where the person is always assisted by someone strong enough to control the chair, or with a powered chair or scooter that has the torque to climb and brakes to descend.

Even then, there are limits, and it should be a deliberate decision. Tell us who will be using it and how, and we will tell you honestly what length you need.

Single fold, multifold and threshold

A short ramp of 2 to 4 feet suits a threshold, a single low step, or a van with a low floor.

A folding ramp of 5 to 6 feet folds in half like a suitcase for a proper step.

A multifold ramp of 8 to 12 feet folds twice, so a long ramp still packs down to a carryable size.

Weight, in both senses

Check the ramp's capacity covers the person, the chair and anything carried. A powered chair alone can exceed 300 lbs.

Also check what the ramp itself weighs. A 12 foot ramp is heavy, and it has to be lifted out of a car by whoever is helping, often several times a day.

Ask us

Tell us the rise, the chair, and who will be pushing. That is enough for us to recommend a length.
