Portable Ramp, 4ft
A 4 foot ramp suiting a 4 inch rise, the most practical length for vans and SUVs.
Why this one
The vehicle length
Suits a rise of about 4 inches, which covers most minivan and SUV load floors with the seats down.
Easy to handle daily
Long enough for a typical van floor, short enough to lift in and out and store flat behind a seat.
Versatile around the house
Also suits a deep threshold, a low porch edge, or a shallow step into a garage or conservatory.
Borderline on a step
On a normal 7 inch step it gives about 1 in 7, still steeper than recommended for self-propelling.
Measure the vehicle properly
Measure a vehicle from the ground to the load floor as it normally parks, since suspension changes the height.
About this product
A 4 foot portable ramp, suiting a rise of about 4 inches. It is the largest of our short ramps and the most useful single length for vehicles.
Where 4 feet fits
At one foot of ramp per inch of rise, 4 feet handles roughly a 4 inch rise.
In practice that covers the back of most minivans and SUVs with the seats down, a single deep threshold, a low porch edge, or a shallow step into a garage or conservatory.
For vehicle use it is often the sweet spot: long enough for the floor height of a typical van, short enough to lift in and out easily and store flat behind a seat.
Still short of a step ramp
A standard step is 6 to 8 inches. On a 7 inch step this gives a slope close to 1 in 7, which is still noticeably steeper than the recommended 1 in 12.
That may be acceptable where the person is always assisted by someone able to control the chair properly, or with a powered chair. It is not a good choice for someone self-propelling. If the step is the problem rather than a threshold, the 6 foot ramp is the safer starting point.
Handling
Short enough that one person can carry and position it without difficulty, which matters if it is being used several times a day at a vehicle.
Before ordering
Measure the rise from the ground to the top surface. For a vehicle, measure from the ground to the load floor with the vehicle parked as it normally would be, since suspension height changes the figure.
Check the width suits the chair and that the capacity covers the person, the chair and anything carried.
