Ceiling Lifts

Permanent and free standing ceiling track lifts that move someone without taking up floor space or a carer's back.

Choosing well

A ceiling lift runs on a track fixed overhead, so a person can be moved from bed to chair, into a bathroom, or up from the floor, with the track taking the weight rather than the carer.

Why a ceiling lift rather than a floor lift

A floor lift has legs that must pass under the bed, wheels that need floor space to manoeuvre, and it has to be pushed while carrying someone. In a small bedroom that is genuinely difficult.

A ceiling lift takes up no floor space at all. Nothing has to be wheeled anywhere, nothing is stored between transfers, and the effort of moving the person is taken by the track rather than by somebody's back.

For daily transfers, several times a day, over years, that difference decides whether care at home stays possible.

One person instead of two

Many transfers that need two carers with a floor lift can be done safely by one with a ceiling lift. For a family providing care themselves, or an agency costing visits, that is often the deciding factor.

Permanent, or free standing

A permanently installed track is fixed to the ceiling structure and is the cleanest solution. It can run a straight line over a bed, or a full room-covering system reaching a bathroom.

A free standing system carries its own frame, so nothing is fixed to the building at all. That suits rented homes, condominiums where alterations are not permitted, and situations where the need may be temporary. It can be taken down and moved.

If you are unsure whether your ceiling can take a track, ask us. Ceiling structure, not the room's appearance, decides what is possible.

Slings matter as much as the lift

The sling is what actually holds the person, and it must suit both them and the lift. Sizes and designs differ for full body support, toileting access and standing, and a sling from one manufacturer does not necessarily suit another maker's system.

We supply the right sling with the lift and show you how to fit it.

What we install

Systems from Guldmann, Arjo, Human Care and Handicare, in permanent and portable configurations, including room-covering track and portable free standing frames. Some models include weighing scales, which saves moving someone twice.

Funding

Ceiling track lifts are among the home modifications covered by the March of Dimes Home & Vehicle Modification Program, up to $15,000 lifetime, with an occupational therapist assessment. Spinal Cord Injury Ontario and WSIB may also apply.
