Zippie IRIS Children's Tilt Wheelchair

A tilt-in-space wheelchair for children that rotates around the child's centre of gravity, so tilting stays light and the wheelbase stays short.

Features & Benefits

Why this one

Up to 60 degree tilt

Ordered with a 40 or 55 degree rotation range, reaching up to 45 or 60 degrees, enough to take most pressure off the sitting bones.

Centre of gravity tilt

The seat rotates around the child's own centre of gravity rather than a fixed hinge, so the tilt stays balanced through its whole range.

Light to operate

Because the tilt is balanced, it takes very little effort to operate whatever the child weighs, which matters over a day of repositioning.

Paediatric rotation arm

The rotation arm was designed specifically for children, giving a smooth controlled motion rather than a sudden one.

Short wheelbase

Rotation in space keeps the wheelbase short, so the chair still turns in a hallway or classroom even at full tilt.

XLOCK folding option

The XLOCK crossbrace locks fully when open, so the chair propels like a rigid frame but still folds compact for the car.

Built-in growth

Growth is built into the frame, with seat widths and depths from 10 to 18 inches, so the chair is re-set rather than replaced.

Lifetime frame warranty

Sunrise warrants the frame and crossbrace for the lifetime of the original purchaser, with one year on Sunrise made parts.

About this product

The Zippie IRIS is the children's version of Sunrise's tilt-in-space chair, and it uses the same rotation-in-space principle as the adult Quickie IRIS. The seat frame rotates around the child's own centre of gravity rather than swinging from a fixed hinge below it.

Two things follow from that, and both matter to whoever is pushing the chair. The tilt stays balanced through its whole range, so it takes very little effort to operate regardless of the child's weight. And the wheelbase stays short, so the chair does not become long and unwieldy at full tilt and can still be turned in a hallway or a classroom.

The rotation arm itself was designed specifically for children, giving a smooth controlled motion rather than a sudden one, which matters for a child who may find being tilted unsettling.

How far it tilts

The chair is ordered with either a 40 or 55 degree rotation range, set to reach up to 45 or 60 degrees of posterior rotation. At 60 degrees the majority of pressure comes off the sitting bones, which is the clinical point of the exercise for a child who cannot shift their own weight.

Folding and growth

The XLOCK folding crossbrace is available, the same mechanism used on the Zippie X'CAPE. It locks fully when the chair is opened, so a folding chair keeps the rigidity of a fixed frame, then folds compact for the car. Frame growth is built in, with seat widths and depths from 10 to 18 inches, so the chair is re-set as the child grows rather than replaced.
