Broda Synthesis Positioning Wheelchair
A positioning wheelchair with 40 degrees of tilt and 90 degrees of recline, using tensioned seating for pressure relief and airflow. Made in Ontario.
Why this one
Front pivot tilt
The seat pivots at the front rather than the rear, so the head stays forward and the person keeps their line of sight when tilted.
40 tilt, 90 recline
Up to 40 degrees of seat tilt and 90 degrees of back recline, both infinitely adjustable rather than set in fixed steps.
Comfort Tension Seating
Tensioned straps redistribute weight across the whole surface and let air move through, addressing pressure, heat and moisture together.
Lay flat for transfers
The back lays flat and the chair takes a Trendelenburg position, which makes supine transfers in and out of the chair far easier.
No restraints needed
Positioning is achieved by the chair holding someone well rather than by restraints, which matters clinically and for dignity.
Adjustable wings
Removable wings adjust for width and height to give individual upper lateral support, and armrests remove and swing away for transfers.
Adjustable legrests
Legrests articulate, elevate and adjust for length, with a flip-down footplate attached rather than a separate part to store.
WC-19 transport option
A WC-19 vehicle transport version is available, though it is factory installed only and cannot be added to a chair later.
About this product
The Synthesis is Broda's positioning wheelchair, made in Kitchener, Ontario. It is built for someone who spends most of the day seated and needs the chair to hold them well rather than to be pushed by them, so it belongs in long term care, complex care at home, and anywhere posture and pressure are the priority.
The seat tilts up to 40 degrees and the back reclines up to 90 degrees, both infinitely adjustable rather than in fixed steps, with Trendelenburg positioning and a lay flat setting as well. That range covers everything from a small pressure relief adjustment through to laying the chair flat for a supine transfer.
Front pivot tilt
Most tilt chairs pivot at the rear, which sends the person backwards and away as they tilt. The Synthesis pivots at the front, so the head stays forward and the line of sight is kept. That sounds like a small distinction and is not. Someone tilted back at the rear ends up looking at the ceiling and out of the conversation, and for a person who spends their day in the chair, being at eye level is the difference between taking part and being talked over.
Comfort Tension Seating
Broda's seating uses tensioned straps rather than a solid cushioned base. Weight is redistributed across the whole surface and air moves through it, which addresses both pressure and the heat and moisture that build up during long periods of sitting.
