Type 3 Manual Wheelchairs
Lightweight manual wheelchairs with an adjustable centre of gravity and quick release axles, for very active full time users.
Type 3 is the Ontario Assistive Devices Program classification for a lightweight manual wheelchair with the adjustment a very active user needs. Chairs in this class are generally in the 25 to 38 lb range, like Type 2, but they add an adjustable centre of gravity, quick release axles, removable armrests and footrests, and anti-tippers.
The centre of gravity adjustment is what separates this class from Type 2, and it is not a minor setting. Moving the rear axle forward makes the chair markedly easier to push and turn, at the cost of rearward stability. Getting that balance right for one person is the difference between a chair that is efficient and one that tips, and it is why these chairs are set up by a therapist rather than adjusted at home.
It matters most for someone who propels themselves all day. Over years, the effort of each push accumulates in the shoulders, and shoulder injury is one of the more common long term problems for full time wheelchair users. A properly set up Type 3 chair is a genuine intervention against that, not a comfort upgrade.
How these are ordered
Each chair is built to the configuration agreed at assessment, so the models below describe what each frame can do rather than one fixed set of measurements. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist is normally involved, and they determine which ADP category applies. ADP funds up to 75 percent of the approved price for eligible Ontario residents.
