Motion Composites HELIO Kids Carbon Wheelchair
A carbon fibre folding wheelchair for children, among the lightest available, built to be re-set as the child grows rather than replaced.
Why this one
Grows with the child
The adjustable back increases seat depth by up to 3 inches in infinite increments, so the chair is re-set as the child grows rather than outgrown.
T700 carbon fibre
T700 high-modulus carbon fibre is the lightest and stiffest material available for a frame, and it damps vibration better than metal.
Fatigue resistance
Carbon resists repeated stress better than metal, which matters for a chair a child will be hard on for years.
Carbon cross brace
A symmetrical moulded carbon cross brace reduces twist and spreads energy through the frame, so less of each push is lost.
Rigid unibody frame
A one-piece frame is stronger than a two-part assembly, weighs less for the same strength and needs less maintenance.
Forged axle plate
The forged vertical axle plate gives precise rear wheel positioning while the vertical mounting keeps the frame rigid and responsive.
Power add-on ready
The frame is certified for power add-on devices, so drive assistance can be fitted later without replacing the chair.
Made in Canada
Designed and built in Quebec, which shortens lead times and keeps parts easier to source than an overseas frame.
About this product
HELIO Kids is Motion Composites' carbon fibre folding chair for children, built on the same architecture as the adult Helio range. It is one of the lightest paediatric folding chairs available, and for a child that is not a specification, it is how much energy is left over for school, play and keeping up.
The frame is T700 high-modulus carbon fibre in a rigid unibody, with a symmetrical moulded carbon cross brace. Carbon is light and stiff, but the property that matters most for a child's chair is fatigue resistance: carbon handles repeated stress better than metal, and children are hard on equipment. In RESNA durability testing Motion Composites reports its carbon frames passing double the required number of cycles.
Growing with the child
The adjustable back increases seat depth by up to 3 inches in infinite increments rather than fixed steps, so the chair can be re-set precisely as the child grows instead of being outgrown. Footplate height adjusts the same way and in seconds. Between those and the seat height, back height and centre of gravity ranges, one frame should stay with a child for years.
Adding power later
The frame is certified for power add-on devices, so drive assistance can be fitted later without replacing the chair. That matters if a child's needs are expected to change, or for longer distances at school.
