Motion Composites HELIO C2 Carbon Folding Wheelchair
A carbon fibre folding wheelchair with a rigid unibody frame and around a 12 lb transport weight, close to rigid chair efficiency in a folding frame.
Why this one
Carbon cross brace
A symmetrical carbon cross brace resists twisting far better than aluminum for its weight, so less of each push is lost to frame flex.
Damps vibration
Carbon damps vibration instead of transmitting it, which is felt through the handrims and, over years, in the wrists and shoulders.
12 lb transport weight
Transport weight is around 12 lbs, so the part that actually gets lifted into a car is about as light as a folding chair gets.
HD adds six ounces
The HD package lifts capacity from 265 to 350 lbs while adding roughly six ounces, where most heavy duty upgrades cost real weight.
Up to 22 inch seat
Seat widths reach 22 inches on the HD build, so a higher capacity does not mean dropping to a less capable class of chair.
Rigid unibody frame
A one-piece frame is stronger than a two-part assembly, weighs less for the same strength and needs less ongoing maintenance.
Embedded caster housing
An embedded caster housing allows simple, precise caster adjustment without the play that develops in bolt-on housings.
Made in Canada
Designed and built in Quebec, which shortens lead times and keeps parts easier to source than an overseas frame.
About this product
The HELIO C2 is the carbon fibre chair in Motion Composites' folding range, and it is the closest a folding chair gets to a rigid one. The frame is a rigid unibody, and the cross brace, the part that normally costs a folding chair its efficiency, is made from ultralight carbon and built symmetrically.
Carbon does two things here that aluminum cannot. It is stiffer for its weight, so the frame resists twisting under load and more of each push reaches the wheels. And it damps vibration rather than transmitting it, which over rough pavement is felt through the frame, the handrims and eventually the shoulders and wrists.
The result is a transport weight of around 12 lbs, so what actually gets lifted into a car is very little, with a starting chair weight around 28 lbs in a full build.
Capacity and sizing
The standard chair carries 265 lbs. The HD package raises that to 350 lbs while adding roughly six ounces to the frame, which is unusual: most heavy duty upgrades cost noticeable weight. Seat widths run up to 22 inches on the HD version, so a higher capacity does not have to mean moving to a different class of chair.
