Bathing Systems
Shower commodes, tub transfer systems and powered bath chairs for people who need support and assistance to bathe.
These are the systems used when bathing or showering can no longer be managed with a grab bar and a seat. They are for people who need to be transferred, supported and often assisted throughout, and they are chosen with a therapist rather than picked off a shelf.
Shower commode chairs
A shower commode is a wheeled chair the person stays in for the whole routine: transferred once at the start, wheeled into the shower, used over the toilet, and dried afterwards. The point is to eliminate the repeated transfers that make bathing exhausting and risky, both for the person and whoever is helping.
They come with tilt, recline and postural supports, because someone who cannot sit unsupported in a wheelchair cannot sit unsupported on a shower chair either.
Tub transfer systems
If the bathroom has a bathtub rather than a roll-in shower, a transfer system bridges it. The person is seated on one side, then slides or rolls across the tub wall on a track or bridge without standing, twisting or being lifted over. For many households this avoids a bathroom renovation entirely.
Bridge sections come in different lengths because every tub and every bathroom is a different size. Measuring properly is what makes the difference between a system that works and one that does not fit.
Powered bath lift chairs
Where the aim is a proper bath rather than a shower, a powered lift chair lowers the person into the water and raises them out again.
Why this needs an assessment
These systems have to match three things at once: the person's posture and support needs, the physical bathroom, and whoever provides the care. A chair that fits the person but not the doorway is no use, and neither is one that suits the bathroom but leaves a carer lifting.
We measure the bathroom, work with your occupational therapist, and specify the system around all three. Contact us to arrange that rather than ordering from a page.
