Type 2 Rollators
Wheeled rollators with smaller wheels, lighter and easier to turn indoors and in tight spaces.
A Type 2 rollator is a wheeled walker built primarily for indoor and light outdoor use. The wheels are smaller than those on a Type 3, typically under 8 inches, which makes the frame lighter, narrower and easier to turn in a hallway, a lift or a shop aisle.
Type 2 or Type 3
Wheel size is the practical difference, and terrain decides it.
Smaller wheels are nimble on smooth floors and easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces, but they catch on pavement cracks, gravel and grass. Larger 8 inch wheels roll over that sort of ground instead of stopping dead at it.
So if most of your walking is inside the house, around an apartment building, or on smooth flat surfaces, a Type 2 will suit you and will be lighter to lift into a car. If you are out on pavements, kerb cuts and uneven ground every day, look at a Type 3.
What a rollator is not for
A rollator rolls. It steadies you and gives you somewhere to sit, but it is not designed to be leaned on heavily, and putting weight on one that is not braked is how people fall. If you need something to take your weight, a Type 1 walking frame is the safer choice.
The seat matters
Most rollators have one, and it changes more than it appears to. Being able to sit down anywhere means people go further from the house and stay out longer, which affects a great deal more than mobility.
Sizing and funding
Rollators come in sizes, and handle height should sit at the crease of your wrist when you stand upright with arms relaxed. Type 2 rollators appear in the Assistive Devices Program device list, but eligibility depends on clinical criteria and the assessor determines the category. Contact us and we will fit one properly.
