Tilt Shower Commode - 18" HPU
A tilting rehab shower commode with an 18 inch seat, for pressure relief and support through a full bathing routine.
Why this one
Pressure relief through tilt
Tilting moves pressure off the sitting bones during the long periods a shower and toilet routine takes.
Posture support
Reclining slightly holds someone who slides forward or cannot hold their head up, making washing safer.
Frees the carer's hands
A carer who is not also steadying the person can use both hands, which makes the whole routine quicker.
One transfer per routine
Wheeled over the toilet and into the shower, so the person transfers once rather than several times.
Aluminum frame
An aluminum frame will not corrode under daily exposure to water and soap.
Other sizes available
Also available in a 20 inch seat, and in a 20 inch self-propelled version.
About this product
A tilting rehab shower commode chair with an 18 inch seat. It does everything a standard shower commode does, and adds tilt, which changes who the chair can be used for.
Why tilt matters in a bathroom
Showering and toileting take time. For someone who cannot shift their own weight, sitting still on a commode aperture for fifteen or twenty minutes concentrates pressure on exactly the tissue most likely to break down.
Tilting the whole seat back moves that load off the sitting bones and onto the back of the chair, the same principle as a tilt-in-space wheelchair. On a long routine it is the difference between a wash that is safe and one that damages skin.
It also holds the person
Tilt is as much about posture as pressure. Someone who slides forward, lists to one side, or cannot hold their head up is far easier and safer to wash when reclined slightly. A carer who is not also steadying the person can use both hands.
That is why tilt chairs are specified for people with limited trunk control rather than simply for comfort.
The whole routine in one chair
Wheeled to the bathroom, positioned over the toilet, rolled into the shower, dried, and wheeled back. The person transfers once. On an aluminum frame, so nothing corrodes in daily wet use.
Sizing and choosing
This is the 18 inch seat. We also stock a 20 inch, and a 20 inch self-propelled version. Seat width should match hip width measured seated, since too narrow pinches and too wide lets the person slide, which matters more on a chair that tilts.
Tilt chairs are usually specified with an occupational therapist. Tell us how the person sits and who is assisting, and we will work through it with you.
