About this product
The same 3-in-1 commode as our standard model, but on castors. It works beside the bed with the pail in place, stands over the existing toilet with the pail removed, and can be used as a shower chair.
What the wheels are for
Wheels are useful where the commode has to move: brought to the bedside at night and pushed back to the bathroom in the morning, wheeled over the toilet for emptying, or moved out of the way in a small room.
They also make life considerably easier for whoever is providing care, since a loaded commode is awkward to lift and unpleasant to carry.
Be clear about what they are not
These are positioning castors, not transport wheels. The commode is moved when empty or with the person seated only for short distances, and the wheels must be locked before anyone sits down, stands up or transfers onto it.
If someone needs to be wheeled any real distance, or wheeled into a shower as part of a routine, a rehab shower commode chair is the right equipment rather than a bedside commode on castors.
Using it safely
Lock the castors every time before a transfer. This is the one habit that matters with a wheeled commode, and it is the one most often skipped. If the person using it may forget, the fixed-leg version is the safer choice.
Set the leg height so the feet rest flat with knees at roughly a right angle.
