An institutional grade commode chair from MedPro Defense, built for constant use in a care setting and equally suitable at home where someone needs to be moved as well as toileted.

Three jobs, one chair

It works as a bedside commode with the pail in place, as a sani-chair over an existing toilet, and as a chair for transporting someone short distances on its four locking castors. That last function is what separates it from a domestic commode: it is built to be pushed with someone in it.

Clearance over the toilet

At 19.5 inches without the pail, it has more clearance than most commodes, which is why it fits over the majority of toilets including higher ADA-height ones. Clearance is the detail that catches people out: a frame that will not straddle your toilet is no use whatever else it does.

Flip-up arms

The armrests lock in position to push up from, and flip back in a single motion for transfers. Flipping back rather than dropping down means the arm clears the side entirely, which suits sliding across from a wheelchair or bed.

Built for cleaning

This is a MedPro Defense product, designed around infection control. The seat is smooth, non-porous and removable, the frame is water resistant, and there are no textured surfaces for contamination to sit in. In a household where someone is unwell, or where more than one person provides care, that matters more than it first appears.

The seat is blow-moulded, so it is softer and springier than rigid plastic, with a soft vinyl back. Removable swing-away footrests with a heel strap come as standard.

Two things to note

It is not designed for use in a shower, so if you need one chair for showering as well, look at a rehab shower commode instead.
