About this product
An L-shaped grab bar, 30 inches on each leg at a 90 degree angle. It gives a vertical hold and a horizontal hold in a single fitting.
Why the shape helps
Standing up and moving are two different actions needing two different holds. Rising from a seated position is a pull, which wants a vertical bar so the hand can slide up as the body rises. Steadying yourself while moving is a push, which wants a horizontal bar to bear down on.
Fit two separate bars and you get both, but the person has to let go of one and find the other, usually mid-movement. An L-shape means the hand simply travels around the corner without releasing.
Where it suits
Most often in a shower, with the vertical leg at the entrance for stepping in and the horizontal leg along the wall for washing. Also beside a toilet, where the vertical section is used to rise and the horizontal to steady while turning.
Fixing it properly
An L-shaped bar has two legs that both need solid fixing, and the corner concentrates load. With 30 inch legs there is usually enough length to reach studs, but the two legs run in different directions, so one may land on structure while the other does not.
That is common, and the answer is blocking behind the wall rather than accepting a weak fixing on one leg. It is also why this shape is worth having installed professionally.
