Grab Bar 18"
A useful middle length, long enough to move your grip along and short enough to fit most places.
Why this one
Room to move your grip
Long enough to slide your grip along while rising, rather than holding at one fixed point.
Suits a toilet
A common choice beside a toilet, covering both pushing up and steadying afterwards.
Often reaches two studs
At 18 inches there is a reasonable chance of reaching two studs, which is the strongest fixing.
Fixing is everything
Only as strong as its fixing. Into a stud it holds full body weight, into drywall anchors it will pull out.
About this product
An 18 inch grab bar. A useful middle length: long enough to move your grip along, short enough to fit most of the places a bar is needed.
Where it suits
Eighteen inches is a common choice beside a toilet, where someone pushes up and then steadies themselves, and at a shower entrance where the hold needs to cover both the step in and the turn.
It also works well mounted vertically, where the extra length gives room to slide the hand up while rising rather than gripping at one fixed point.
Fixing it properly
A grab bar is only as strong as what it is screwed into. Into a wall stud or solid blocking it will hold a person's full weight in a fall. Into drywall with plastic anchors it will pull out, at the moment someone has already committed their weight to it.
At 18 inches there is a reasonable chance of reaching two studs, since studs are commonly 16 inches apart on centre, but it depends where the bar needs to go. If the right position does not line up with structure, blocking can be added behind the wall.
If you are not sure what is behind your bathroom wall, do not guess.
Placement matters as much as length
A bar in the wrong place is not used, and a bar used at the wrong angle is less effective. Tell us where the person feels unsteady and what they are doing at that moment, and we will advise on both position and length.
Delivery and installation
The price shown is for the bar only. Delivery and installation are quoted separately, since both depend on where you are and what your walls are made of. Installation is available as a service.
