Where a long bar earns its place
Along the full length of a bathtub, so someone can hold on from the moment they approach to the moment they are seated. Along a shower wall where the person moves while washing. Or on a run of wall between a toilet and a basin, where the journey between the two is the unsteady part.
The advantage is continuity. There is no point where the person has to let go and reach again, which is where balance is most often lost.
Fixing it properly
A grab bar is only as strong as what it is screwed into. At 32 inches the bar will span two or three studs at 16 inch centres, which allows a genuinely strong mounting. That is the main practical benefit of a long bar: there is more structure available to fix into.
It has to be fixed into that structure, though. Into drywall with plastic anchors, any bar will pull out, and a long bar invites people to put more weight through it.
A note on placement
A long bar has to be level and at the right height across its whole run, which is harder to get right than a short one. Too high and the person cannot push down on it; too low and they stoop.
This is where professional installation pays for itself, since a badly positioned long bar is an expensive mistake to correct in tile.
