Features & Benefits

Why this one

A fixed handhold

A solid handhold at one specific point, such as beside a toilet or at a shower entrance.

Fits tight spaces

Fits where a longer bar will not, such as between a toilet and a wall or on a narrow run of tile.

Fixing is everything

Only as strong as its fixing. Into a stud it holds full body weight, into drywall anchors it will pull out.

May need blocking

A short bar may not reach two studs, so blocking may need adding behind the wall. Worth knowing first.

About this product

A 12 inch grab bar, the shortest length we stock. It gives a solid handhold at one specific point rather than support across a movement.

Where a 12 inch bar works

Beside a toilet, where someone needs something to push up from. At the entrance to a shower, where the step in is the difficult part. Or vertically beside a doorway, where the hold is about steadying rather than pulling.

It also suits places where there simply is not room for a longer bar, such as between a toilet and a wall, or on a narrow section of tile between fittings.

Where it does not

If the person needs support through a sequence of movements, standing and then turning and then stepping, a short bar means letting go partway. A 24 inch or longer bar lets them keep hold throughout.

Think about what the person actually does, not just where they feel unsteady.

Fixing it properly

A grab bar is only as strong as what it is screwed into. Into a stud or solid blocking it will hold a person's full weight. Into drywall with plastic anchors it will pull out, at the moment someone has already committed their weight to it.

A short bar can be harder to fix well, because there is less length to reach two studs. That often means blocking has to be added behind the wall, which is worth knowing before you start.

Delivery and installation

The price shown is for the bar only. Delivery and installation are quoted separately. We install grab bars and find the structure first, which is the part that matters.
