A 42 inch grab bar, the longest we stock. It is a specialist length rather than a general purpose one, and it exists for specific situations.
When you actually need 42 inches
Spanning a full bathtub wall from end to end. Running a continuous handrail along a hallway or a landing. Or crossing a wide shower where someone moves from the entrance right through to the far corner.
It also suits situations where the required support height varies along the run, for example beside a bath where someone needs a high hold standing and a lower one seated. Mounted diagonally, a long bar covers both.
Most people do not need this length
A 42 inch bar costs more, needs more fixing points, and is harder to position correctly. If the support is needed at one point, or across one movement, a 24 or 32 inch bar will do the job better and cost less.
Buy this length because the run genuinely requires it, not because longer seems safer.
Fixing it properly
At 42 inches the bar crosses three studs at 16 inch centres, which allows an extremely strong mounting. It must be fixed into those studs along its length, not just at the ends, and never into drywall anchors.
Getting a bar this long level and correctly positioned is difficult, and mistakes are drilled into tile. Professional installation is strongly recommended at this length.
