Where a bar this long is the right answer
Along the whole length of a standard bathtub, which is usually around 60 inches, a 36 inch bar covers the section where someone actually needs support. Along a shower wall where the person moves while washing. Or on a hallway wall as a continuous handrail between rooms.
It is also worth considering where two people of different heights use the same bathroom. A longer bar mounted on a slight diagonal gives a comfortable hold at more than one height, which a short bar cannot.
Fixing it properly
A grab bar is only as strong as what it is screwed into. At 36 inches the bar will span two or three studs at 16 inch centres, so there is ample structure to fix into, which is the main practical advantage of this length.
That structure has to actually be used. A long bar fixed at only one end into a stud, with the other end in drywall, will fail at the weak end, and it invites more weight than a short bar because it looks substantial.
Placement
Getting a 36 inch bar level and at the right height across its whole run is genuinely harder than a short one, and the consequences of getting it wrong are drilled into tile. This is where professional installation is worth paying for.
