Type 2 Manual Wheelchairs

Lightweight manual wheelchairs sized and specified to the individual, for people who use a wheelchair regularly rather than occasionally.

Choosing well

Type 2 is the Ontario Assistive Devices Program classification for a lightweight manual wheelchair, generally in the 25 to 38 lb range, with removable arms and swing away footrests. Where a Type 1 chair is a standard folding chair supplied in a few stock sizes, a Type 2 chair is lighter, better specified and sized to the person: seat width and depth, back height, wheel size and castors are chosen to suit how they sit and move.

It suits an active user who is in the chair regularly rather than occasionally. Weight matters here. A chair that is ten pounds lighter is ten pounds less to push all day and less to lift into a car, which over months is the difference between a chair someone uses and one that stays folded in a hallway.

If you need more than this, the next step up is Type 3, which adds an adjustable centre of gravity, quick release axles and anti-tippers for very active full time users. Several frames are sold across both categories with different option packages, so the same model name can appear in either.

How these are ordered

Each chair is built to the configuration agreed at assessment, so the models below describe what each frame can do rather than one fixed set of measurements. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist is normally involved, and they determine which ADP category applies. ADP funds up to 75 percent of the approved price for eligible Ontario residents.

Contact us to arrange an assessment, or to talk through which frame suits before you book one.
