Sliding Transfer Bench with Swivel Seat
A transfer bench whose seat slides and swivels, so you are turned and carried across rather than twisting over the tub edge.
Why this one
Slides and swivels
The seat both slides across the frame and swivels, so it handles crossing the tub wall and turning the body.
No twisting
Swivelling means your hips and spine stay aligned and your legs follow the seat, rather than you twisting over the tub edge.
After hip surgery
Particularly suited to anyone told not to twist after hip surgery, or with back pain or limited trunk control.
Much easier for carers
Rotating and sliding a seat is far less physically demanding for a carer than lifting and repositioning a person.
Locks at each position
The seat locks at each position, so it will not rotate or slide while someone is sitting down or standing up.
Adjustable legs
Height adjustable legs with non-slip tips, set independently inside and outside the tub for uneven surfaces.
About this product
This bench does both things: the seat slides along the frame and it swivels. It is the most capable transfer bench we stock, and it is aimed at the situation where getting into the bath has become genuinely difficult rather than just awkward.
Why swivel as well as slide
Sliding solves moving across the tub wall. Swivelling solves the other half of the problem, which is turning your body to face the right way and getting your legs over the edge.
On a fixed seat you sit down facing outwards, then twist your torso and lift your legs over. That twist is what hurts after a hip replacement, and it is what people cannot do with a stiff back or poor trunk control. A swivel seat turns you instead, so your hips and spine stay aligned and your legs follow the seat.
Who it suits
Anyone told not to twist after hip surgery. Anyone with significant back pain, arthritis or limited trunk control. And situations where a carer is doing most of the work, because rotating and sliding a seat is far less physically demanding than lifting and repositioning a person.
Practical points
The frame straddles the tub wall in the usual way, with height adjustable legs and non-slip tips set independently for the floor and the tub base. The seat locks at each position, so it does not rotate or slide while someone is sitting down or standing up.
It takes more floor space beside the bath than a standard bench, so check the room before ordering.
Also worth knowing
Add a handheld shower head. A fixed overhead shower is aimed at someone standing, so seated it mostly sprays the wall.
