Sitz Bath
A shallow basin that fits over the toilet for warm water soaking, without filling or climbing into a bathtub.
Why this one
Fits on the toilet
Fits over the toilet bowl, so soaking takes a couple of minutes rather than filling and climbing into a bath.
Practical to repeat
Makes several soaks a day practical, which is what is usually recommended after childbirth or surgery.
No getting into a bath
Avoids getting into a bathtub, which is difficult or not permitted while recovering from perineal or rectal surgery.
Overflow and fill tube
Most include an overflow so the bowl cannot flood, and many come with a bag and tube for running fresh water through.
About this product
A sitz bath is a shallow basin that fits over a toilet bowl, letting you soak the perineal area in warm water while seated, without filling a bathtub or getting into one.
What it is for
It is prescribed or recommended after childbirth, haemorrhoid treatment, perineal or rectal surgery, and for anyone managing an infection or irritation in that area. Warm water soaking relieves pain, keeps the area clean, and increases blood flow to tissue that is healing.
Most people using one have been told to soak several times a day. Doing that in a full bathtub would be exhausting and, for someone recovering from surgery, often impossible. A sitz bath makes it a two minute job.
How it works
The basin sits on the toilet with the seat raised. You fill it with warm water, sit as you normally would, and soak. Most have an overflow so the bowl cannot flood, and many include a bag and tube so fresh water can be run through during the soak.
Practical points
Use warm water rather than hot, since healing tissue is more sensitive than usual and skin that has been soaked is easier to scald. Follow whatever your doctor or midwife advised on timing, frequency and anything added to the water.
Rinse and dry it between uses, and do not share it between people.
