Med-Aire 8" Alternating Pressure and Low Air Loss Mattress

A mattress replacement system combining alternating pressure with low air loss, for preventing and treating pressure injuries.

Features & Benefits

Why this one

Alternating pressure

Twenty air cells inflate and deflate on a ten minute cycle, so the areas taking the body's weight change continuously.

Low air loss

A steady flow of air through the surface carries away heat and moisture, because damp skin breaks down far more easily.

Set to the person

Adjustable weight settings match the internal pressure to the individual, rather than leaving it at a default setting.

Static mode

Static mode holds the surface even, making transfers, repositioning and personal care considerably easier.

CPR deflation

The mattress deflates in about 20 seconds through the CPR valve, for emergency access without moving the person.

Replaceable cells

Individual cells can be replaced on their own, so one damaged cell does not mean replacing the whole mattress.

Washable cover

The cover is water resistant, vapour permeable, low shear and machine washable, protecting skin from friction and moisture.

Pressure alarm

Audible and visual alarms warn if air pressure drops, so a fault is noticed rather than discovered later.

About this product

A full mattress replacement system that combines alternating pressure with low air loss, for someone at risk of pressure injuries who cannot reposition themselves in bed. It replaces the existing mattress on a standard bed frame rather than sitting on top of one.

Two therapies working together

Twenty individual air cells inflate and deflate on a ten minute cycle, so the areas carrying the body's weight change continuously instead of being loaded for hours. That is what protects the skin over the sacrum, hips and heels.

Low air loss adds a steady, quiet flow of air through the surface to carry away heat and moisture. Damp skin breaks down far more readily than dry skin, so for anyone who perspires or has incontinence this is not a comfort feature, it is part of the protection.

Set to the person

The pump has adjustable weight settings, so the pressure inside the cells is matched to the individual rather than left at a default. Too firm and the pressure relief is reduced; too soft and the person sinks through onto the base. A static mode holds the surface even, which makes transfers, repositioning and personal care easier, and an audible and visual alarm warns if pressure drops.

Practical details for carers

The mattress deflates in about 20 seconds for CPR access, which is the reason a CPR valve exists on a system like this. Cells are individually replaceable, so a single damaged cell does not mean a new mattress. The cover is water resistant, vapour permeable, low shear and machine washable, and there is a pillow section at the head for stability.

Capacity and size

Rated to 350 lbs, sized 36 by 80 inches and 8 inches deep. For a heavier person, or for a wider bed, we supply bariatric versions instead and would rather match that properly at the outset.

Getting advice

Choosing a pressure care surface is usually a clinical decision involving an occupational therapist or nurse. Contact us and we will work through it with whoever is providing care.
