Med-Aire 5" Alternating Pressure and Low Air Loss Overlay
An alternating pressure and low air loss overlay that sits on an existing mattress, for lower risk pressure care.
Why this one
Fits over your mattress
Sits on top of the existing mattress, so the bed stays as it is and the cost and disruption are lower than a replacement.
Alternating pressure
Air cells inflate and deflate in a cycle, so the areas carrying the body's weight change continuously through the day and night.
Low air loss
A gentle flow of air manages heat and moisture at the skin surface, which matters for anyone who perspires or has incontinence.
CPR and washable cover
Deflates quickly for CPR access, and the cover is water resistant and vapour permeable for skin protection and cleaning.
About this product
An overlay sits on top of an existing mattress rather than replacing it. That makes it the simpler and less expensive way to introduce pressure care, and it suits someone at lower risk, or a situation where the existing bed and mattress are staying.
Alternating pressure and low air loss
Air cells inflate and deflate in a cycle, so the areas taking the person's weight change continuously rather than being loaded for hours at a time. A gentle flow of air through the surface manages heat and moisture at the skin, which matters because damp skin breaks down more readily than dry skin.
Where an overlay is and is not the right answer
An overlay adds 5 inches to the height of the bed. That is worth thinking about before ordering, because it changes the transfer height, it may affect how well bed rails still work, and it can make getting in and out harder for someone who was managing.
An overlay also gives less depth of immersion than a full replacement mattress. For someone at high risk, with an existing pressure injury, or of higher body weight, a deeper replacement system will protect better and is usually what a therapist will recommend.
Practical points
The overlay deflates quickly for CPR access. The cover is water resistant and vapour permeable, and the pump runs quietly enough for a bedroom rather than a ward.
Getting advice
Whether an overlay or a replacement system suits is a clinical judgement, usually made with an occupational therapist or a nurse. Tell us the situation and we will help you work it out rather than sell you the cheaper option by default.
