About this product
This is the outdoor version of Handicare's 1000 straight stairlift, for steps up to a porch, a deck, a garden or a side entrance. An indoor lift fitted outside will not survive, so if the stairs are exposed this is the specification you need.
What makes it an outdoor lift
The plastics are UV protected so they do not go brittle and chalky in sunlight, the hardware is zinc coated against corrosion, and the upholstery is a UV stable slate vinyl rather than an indoor fabric. A waterproof cover comes with it, so the seat stays dry between uses.
The detail that matters most is the rail. It is anodised aluminium with the gear rack hidden inside rather than exposed along the outside. On an outdoor lift that is the difference between a drive mechanism collecting rain, grit, leaves and road salt and one that is shielded from all of it.
Being realistic about winter
Handicare describe the 1000 as suitable for outdoor installation in a moderate climate. Ontario winters are not moderate. These lifts are installed outdoors here routinely and work well, but it does mean using the cover, keeping the rail clear of ice and snow, and accepting that an exposed lift needs more attention than an indoor one. We would rather set that expectation before installation.
Capacity and seating
350 lbs as standard, or 440 lbs with the XXL heavy duty upgrade. Note that if a folding rail is specified the capacity reduces to 302 lbs, so the two options need considering together rather than separately.
The Smart seat adjusts for height, armrest width and seat depth, and folds with the footrest and armrests to keep the steps clear. A perch seat is available for anyone who finds bending at the hip or knee difficult, letting them ride semi-standing.
