Type 4 Manual Wheelchairs

Type 4 is the Ontario Assistive Devices Program classification for an ultra lightweight manual wheelchair, generally under 25 lbs. These are usually rigid rather than folding frames, with an adjustable centre of gravity, quick release axles, removable armrests and footrests, and anti-tippers.

A rigid frame has no cross brace to flex, so more of every push reaches the wheels instead of being absorbed by the chair. Combined with the lower weight, that makes a real difference to how far someone can go and how they feel at the end of the day. The trade is transport: a rigid chair does not fold, though the back folds down and the wheels come off, and most users find the result no harder to load than a folding chair once they are used to it.

These chairs are for people who propel themselves all day and for whom efficiency is the priority. Frame material matters at this level, with aluminum, titanium and carbon options behaving differently in weight, ride and price.

How these are ordered

An ultra lightweight chair is measured and built to one person. Seat width and depth, frame angles, axle position, back height and wheel setup are all specified at assessment, and small differences change how the chair rides. The models below describe what each frame can do rather than one fixed set of measurements.

An occupational therapist or physiotherapist is normally involved and determines which ADP category applies. ADP funds up to 75 percent of the approved price for eligible Ontario residents. Contact us to arrange an assessment.
