Bed Accessories

Bed rails, trapezes, grab handles, fall mats, risers and alarms, matched to the bed and the person using it.

Choosing well

The accessories here do three different jobs: help someone move in and out of bed, keep them safe once they are in it, and adapt a bed to the person using it.

Rails, and a word about fitting them properly

Bed rails are used for two quite different reasons, and the distinction matters.

As a mobility aid, a rail gives something solid to pull on when rolling over, sitting up or standing. Most people buying a rail want this.

As a barrier, a rail stops someone rolling out of bed. That is a different purpose, and it needs more care.

Rails must match the bed and the mattress. Gaps between the rail and the mattress, or between the bars, can trap a limb, a head or a neck, and entrapment is a serious risk for anyone confused, frail, or unable to free themselves. A rail that fits one bed may be unsafe on another, and adding a thicker mattress changes the gaps.

Most of the rails on this page are made for a specific bed: Drive Solite, Euro, Halsa, Medline, Human Care. Tell us which bed you have and we will supply the rails designed for it rather than something that approximately fits.

If someone is at risk of falling but a rail is not appropriate, a fall mat beside the bed is often the safer answer.

Getting in and out

A trapeze hangs above the bed and lets someone pull themselves up and reposition using their arms, which helps a great deal with pressure relief and bed changes.

A bedside grab handle or rotating rail gives support for getting to the edge and standing.

Bed risers raise a bed that is too low, so standing up is easier. Height matters as much in bed as it does on a chair or a toilet.

Fall protection

Fall mats sit beside the bed and cushion a fall. They suit someone who gets up at night and is unsteady, or anyone for whom rails would be a hazard rather than a help.

A bed or chair alarm sounds when the person starts to get up, giving a carer warning rather than discovering a fall afterwards.

Ask us

Tell us which bed you have and what the person is finding difficult. Rails in particular should be matched, not guessed.
