Length is the useful part
A short rail gives a handhold at one point. At up to 30 inches this covers the whole stretch someone moves along while getting out of bed: rolling onto their side, pushing up to sitting, then shuffling to the edge.
That means they keep hold throughout rather than letting go and reaching again partway, which is where balance is lost.
The dimensions that matter for safety
The rail stands 19.5 inches high with a 4 inch gap between the bars.
Those numbers are worth checking against the person. Gaps in and around a bed rail can trap a limb, a head or a neck, and that risk is highest for someone confused, very frail, or unable to free themselves. If that describes the person, tell us before ordering and we will talk through whether a rail is the right answer at all.
Rail height also has to suit the mattress. A thick mattress reduces how far the rail stands above the sleeping surface, which changes both its usefulness and its safety.
Non-pivoting
This one stays where it is set. That makes it simpler and more rigid, with nothing to unlatch accidentally. The trade is that it does not swing out of the way, so it is always there.
