Why a lift

Usually It Is the Caregiver's Back That Decides

Families rarely buy a patient lift because the person being moved asked for one. They buy it because whoever is lifting them cannot keep doing it.

Manual transfers are the most common cause of injury among people caring at home, and once a spouse or an adult child hurts their back, home care usually ends. A lift is often what keeps someone in their own house rather than in a facility.

Bought new, lifts are expensive, which is why plenty of households struggle on without one for far longer than they should. Refurbished brings that decision within reach, with brand new batteries fitted and a one year warranty on most equipment.

Why it matters here

On a Lift, the Battery Is a Safety Item

A patient lift is a battery-powered machine that raises a person off the floor or a bed. If the battery fails partway through a transfer, someone is left suspended.

Tired batteries are the commonest fault on used lifts, and the least visible. A lift that raises fine on a showroom floor with a full charge can struggle on the third transfer of the day. We fit brand new batteries where applicable, so the lift performs as it should from the first day rather than after you have paid for replacements.

It also comes with a one year warranty on most equipment, which on a machine that carries a person is worth considerably more than the saving on a private sale.

Choosing

Floor Lift or Sit-to-Stand

These are different pieces of equipment for different people, and choosing wrongly is expensive.

Floor Lift

Takes the person's full weight in a sling. Suits anyone who cannot bear weight through their legs at all, including someone being lifted from the floor after a fall.

Sit-to-Stand Lift

Assists someone into standing rather than lifting them entirely. Requires them to bear some weight and hold on, but it is quicker, less invasive and helps maintain strength.

Check the Base Width

The legs of a floor lift have to pass under the bed or around the chair. Measure the clearance under your bed frame before buying, as this is the commonest reason a lift will not work in a room.

Think About the Room

A lift needs floor space to manoeuvre and somewhere to live between transfers. In a small bedroom that matters as much as the specification.

Slings

The Sling Is Not an Afterthought

A lift is only half the equipment. The sling is what actually holds the person, and it has to suit both them and the lift.

Slings come in different sizes and different designs, for full body support, toileting access, or standing. Using the wrong size is genuinely dangerous, and a sling from one manufacturer does not necessarily suit another maker's lift.

If you are buying a used lift from a private seller, ask what sling comes with it and what size it is. If the answer is vague, that is a problem rather than a detail. We supply the right sling with the lift and show you how to fit it.

Buy or rent

Buying Used, or Renting

Both are available, and how long it is needed usually decides.

Renting suits a period of recovery, a palliative situation, or the weeks after a hospital discharge while longer-term arrangements are made. Service is included.

Buying refurbished suits an ongoing need, where the cost of renting for years would be considerably more than owning.

If you are not sure whether a floor lift or a sit-to-stand suits, renting first is a sensible way to find out before committing.

Funding

Funding a Patient Lift

Several programs contribute towards patient lifts for eligible Ontario residents, though they differ on whether refurbished equipment qualifies and some fund only new devices.

That is frequently why refurbished is the practical answer, particularly where a lift is needed immediately and an application would take weeks.

We handle ADP, ODSP, WSIB and HVMP applications every day.

Who is being moved, who is doing the moving, and where. Those three answers decide between a floor lift and a sit-to-stand faster than any spec sheet.

Questions

Used & Refurbished Patient Lift FAQs

Do used patient lifts come with a warranty?

Yes. Most of our refurbished equipment comes with a one year warranty, and an extended warranty is available for longer cover. On a lift that matters more than on most equipment, because it carries a person. Ask us for the terms on the lift you are considering.

What about the battery?

We fit brand new batteries where applicable. On a lift the battery is a safety item rather than a convenience: a tired battery can struggle partway through a transfer, and that is the commonest and least visible fault on used lifts.

Floor lift or sit-to-stand: which do I need?

A floor lift takes the person's full weight in a sling and suits anyone who cannot bear weight through their legs. A sit-to-stand assists someone into standing and requires them to bear some weight and hold on. Tell us how the person moves now and we will tell you which applies.

Does a sling come with it?

We supply the correct sling with the lift and show you how to fit it. Sling size and type matter a great deal, and a sling from one manufacturer does not necessarily suit another maker's lift, which is a common problem with privately bought lifts.

Will the lift fit in the bedroom?

Measure the clearance under the bed frame, since the legs of a floor lift must pass underneath it. Also consider the floor space needed to manoeuvre and somewhere for the lift to live between transfers. Tell us the room and we will advise.

Will you show us how to use it?

Yes. We show you how to use the lift and fit the sling when we deliver it. Using a lift confidently is largely a matter of having been shown properly once.

How much does a used patient lift cost?

Far less than new. The exact price depends on the type of lift and its condition. Call 905-615-9302 and we will tell you what is in stock today and quote it delivered.

Can I get funding for a patient lift?

Several programs contribute for eligible Ontario residents, though some fund only new equipment. We handle ADP, ODSP, WSIB and HVMP applications every day and can tell you quickly what is realistic. See our funding page.
