Transition Ramp, 4"
A transition ramp for a 4 inch rise, past threshold height and into low steps.
Why this one
For a 4 inch rise
Bridges a 4 inch rise, covering low steps, raised back door landings and the drop into a garage.
Past threshold height
The height at which people stop calling it a threshold and start calling it a step.
Steeper than a long ramp
Bridges a fixed height in a short distance, so it is steeper than a full length portable ramp.
Know who is pushing
Suits crossing with momentum, an attendant, or a powered chair, rather than someone self-propelling.
Measure accurately
A ramp sized for 4 inches on a 6 inch step leaves a lip at the top, which defeats the point.
About this product
A transition ramp for a 4 inch rise. At this height you are past thresholds and into low steps.
Where 4 inches comes from
A single low step, a raised landing at a back door, the drop from a house into a garage, or a deep sill on an older property. None of these is a full step, but all of them stop a wheelchair completely.
Four inches is also the point at which people stop thinking of it as a threshold and start calling it a step, which is usually when they contact us.
It is still a transition ramp, not a step ramp
This bridges a fixed height in a short distance, so the gradient is steeper than a full length ramp would give.
That is acceptable for a short rise crossed with momentum, particularly with an attendant or a powered chair. It is not the same as a 4 foot portable ramp, which spreads the same rise over a much longer run and is far easier to push up.
If the person self-propels and finds this hard work, a longer portable ramp is the better answer for the same step.
Measuring
Measure from the lower surface to the top of the step or sill. Get this right: a ramp sized for 4 inches sitting on a 6 inch step leaves a lip at the top, which is exactly the problem you were trying to remove.
Fitting
It must sit square and be fully supported, with no rocking and no movement when a wheel goes onto it. Check the width suits the doorway and the chair, including a powered chair or scooter, which are wider than a manual chair.
