Quickie Xtender Power Assist Wheels
Motorised rear wheels that multiply each push, cutting the effort of propelling by up to 45 percent while the chair still handles as a manual.
Why this one
45% less effort
Motorised rear wheels multiply each push, cutting the energy needed by as much as 45 percent over the same distance.
Protects shoulders
May help reduce or prevent repetitive strain injury to shoulders, wrists and elbows, which is what ends many people's independent propelling.
Wheels stay in sync
The two wheels communicate electronically and adjust their speeds to keep the chair straight, helping where arm strength is uneven.
Suits uneven strength
Particularly useful after a stroke or with hemiplegia, where a manual chair constantly pulls towards the weaker side.
Rollback prevention
Rollback prevention holds the chair on an incline, so it does not roll back between pushes on a slope.
Downhill speed control
Downhill speed control stops the chair running away on a descent, which is where unassisted chairs feel least safe.
Quick release wheels
The whole wheel assembly quick-releases, so the chair reverts to ordinary manual wheels for the car or storage.
Still a manual chair
The chair keeps the look, control and handling of a manual wheelchair rather than becoming a powered device.
About this product
The Xtender replaces the rear wheels of a manual wheelchair with motorised ones. You still push the handrims exactly as before, but each push is multiplied, so the same effort takes you considerably further.
Sunrise put the reduction in energy at up to 45 percent. In practice that is the difference between a route you avoid and one you take, and between arriving somewhere ready to do things and arriving worn out.
Protecting shoulders
This matters more than distance. Years of pushing a manual chair wears out shoulders, wrists and elbows, and repetitive strain injury is one of the main reasons long-term wheelchair users end up losing independence. Sunrise cite research suggesting the Xtender may help reduce or prevent those secondary injuries. Fitting assistance before the damage is done is a great deal better than reacting afterwards.
For uneven arm strength
The two wheels talk to each other electronically and adjust their speeds to keep the chair going straight. That is a real benefit for anyone whose arms are not equally strong, including after a stroke or with hemiplegia, where a standard chair constantly veers towards the weaker side and has to be corrected.
It still behaves like a manual chair
The look, the control and the handling stay the same. Rollback prevention holds the chair on an incline and downhill speed control stops it running away. The whole wheel assembly quick-releases, so the chair can go back to ordinary manual wheels for the car or for storage.
Fitting
The Xtender is designed for Quickie frames including the Quickie 2, 5R, GP series and Nitrum, with the Zippie X'CAPE and Quickie QRi available through Built-4-Me. Weight capacity is 265 lbs, which is lower than a typical manual chair, so it needs checking against the user. Bring your chair in and we will confirm the fit.
