About this product
The Companion Plus is a front-mount power assist. A small powered wheel and handlebar clamp onto the front of a manual wheelchair, lifting the castors clear and pulling the chair along like a compact electric trike. It is made by Cheelcare in Richmond Hill, Ontario.
Ten seconds on, ten seconds off
Once the mounting hardware is fitted, the Companion connects and disconnects in under ten seconds, and you can do it yourself without transferring out of the chair. That is the difference between a system you use for the right trips and one that becomes permanent by default. Powered for the distance, manual the moment you are inside.
The install is reversible
It mounts with four clamps and no drilling, so nothing about your chair is permanently altered and the hardware adds under 2 lbs. If you change chairs or decide it is not for you, the frame is untouched.
Genuine pace, and a caution
The 350 watt motor gives five speed settings up to around 26 km/h, with reverse, and up to 18 miles on a charge with about a three hour recharge. That is considerably faster than a mobility scooter, which is the appeal for covering real distance, but it also means rules about where such devices may be used and how fast vary between municipalities. Worth checking what applies locally before you buy.
Controls set up around you
It comes with a twist throttle, reverse selector, a bicycle-style brake lever and a backlit LCD display, by default on set sides, but the positions can be specified and a thumb throttle substituted. If hand function is limited, ask us about the Companion Q, which uses push-down handlebar controls designed for users with reduced grip.
