Evac+Chair 400H Evacuation Chair

A stairway evacuation chair that lets one person take another safely down stairs when lifts are out of use.

Features & Benefits

Why this one

Self-braking tracks

Self-braking friction tracks carry the weight down the stair nosings, so the operator guides and controls rather than lifting.

Adjustable descent speed

Track tension adjusts to set the speed of descent, so the chair can be matched to the particular staircase it will be used on.

One person operation

One person can move a passenger considerably larger than themselves, which would be impossible by carrying them down.

5-point harness

A five point quick release harness, adjustable head restraint, armrests and footrest hold the passenger securely during descent.

Check your stairs

Rated for staircases between 20 and 40 degrees and needs at least 23 inches of stairway width. Measure yours before ordering.

Dual position seat

The seat sets flat or hammock style, so the chair suits different passengers and different transfer situations.

Lockable rear wheels

Large rear wheels lock, so the chair holds still on a landing or while a passenger is transferred onto it.

Wall mounted and ready

Folds compactly onto a wall bracket and opens in seconds, so it stays visible and ready rather than stored in a cupboard.

About this product

When a fire alarm sounds, the lifts stop. That is the problem this chair solves. Anyone who cannot manage stairs unaided, whether a wheelchair user, someone recovering from surgery, or a person who simply cannot go down four flights quickly, needs a way out that does not depend on the lift or on waiting for the fire service.

The Evac+Chair 400H is a stairway evacuation chair. It stores folded on a wall bracket, opens in seconds, and lets one person take another safely down a staircase.

How it works

Self-braking friction tracks run over the stair nosings and carry the weight, so the operator is guiding and controlling rather than lifting or taking the load. The tracks adjust for tension, which sets the speed of descent to suit the staircase. That is why a small attendant can move a passenger considerably larger than themselves, which would be impossible by carrying.

It is designed for going down. If your building needs upward evacuation, from a basement or an underground level, a different model is required and we can advise.

Passenger safety

A five point quick release harness, adjustable head restraint, armrests and a footrest hold the passenger securely, which matters when someone is frightened and being moved down stairs. The seat sets in two positions, flat or hammock style. Large rear wheels lock so the chair stays put on a landing.

Before you buy, two things

Check your staircases. The 400H is rated for stairs between 20 and 40 degrees and needs at least 23 inches of stairway width. Measure before ordering rather than after.

And plan the training. The manufacturer recommends regular practice, ideally during fire drills, and advises two person operation on steep stairs or with heavier passengers. An evacuation chair nobody has practised with is not much use at two in the morning.
