Features & Benefits

Why this one

Less lifting needed

Contoured to slide under with less lifting, which matters for someone in pain or on strict bed rest.

More comfortable shape

Sits lower and more comfortably against the body than a flat, straight sided pan.

Secure side grips

Side grips let a carer lift a full pan level and confidently, which is exactly where accidents happen.

Easier for carers

Less lifting also means less physical strain on whoever is providing the care.

Commode if possible

If the person can reach the edge of the bed, a bedside commode is more comfortable and more dignified.

Consider a second pan

For daily use, a second pan is worth having so one is always clean and ready.

About this product

A contoured bedpan with grips on each side, for use in bed by someone who cannot get to a toilet or a commode.

The shape does the work

A flat, straight-sided bedpan has to be lifted onto and positioned under a person, which usually means them raising their hips or a carer rolling them. For someone in pain, very weak, or on strict bed rest, that is difficult and often the worst part of the day.

A contoured pan is shaped to slide under with less lifting, and it sits lower and more comfortably against the body. Less lifting means less strain for the person and less physical work for whoever is helping.

The side grips

They sound minor and are not. Gripping a full bedpan securely while removing it is exactly where accidents happen, and an accident with a bedpan is unpleasant for everyone and demoralising for the person in the bed.

Proper grips let a carer lift it level and confidently, with one hand free.

Where it fits

Bed rest after surgery or illness. Overnight, where getting up is unsafe. And palliative or end of life care, where movement is limited or painful.

If the person can be moved to the edge of the bed, a bedside commode is usually more comfortable and more dignified. A bedpan is for when that is not possible.

Practical points

Rinse and disinfect after each use, and do not share between people. If it is in daily use, a second pan is worth having so one is always clean and ready.

A urinal may be easier for a man for urination, with the bedpan kept for bowel movements.
