Seating Systems
Custom moulded and modular seating built around the shape a person actually has, rather than a standard shape.
Complete seating systems, including custom moulded seating made to the individual.
When a cushion and a back are not enough
Most people are seated well by a good cushion and a back support fitted to a standard chair.
Some are not. Where a body has a fixed asymmetry, a pronounced spinal curve, or very little trunk control, an off-the-shelf shape fights the person rather than supporting them. Forcing a fixed shape onto a body that does not match it is uncomfortable, causes pressure damage where contact concentrates, and can make posture worse over time.
A seating system is built around the shape the person actually has.
Custom moulded seating
The person is positioned in their best achievable posture and that shape is captured, then a back and cushion are manufactured to match it exactly.
The result supports across the whole contact area rather than at a few points, which spreads pressure, improves how long someone can tolerate sitting, and steadies the trunk enough to free the arms and head for everything else.
It is a bigger process than buying a cushion: assessment, shape capture, manufacture, fitting and usually adjustment afterwards. It is specified by a seating therapist, and we work alongside them.
Modular seating for children
Systems such as the Sunrise Medical Wonderseat come in sizes and adjust as a child grows, with lateral supports, pommels and harnesses that move as posture changes.
For a growing child this is often better than a moulded system, which captures a shape that will change.
Positioning parts
Bolster cushions with pommels help keep the knees separated and the pelvis central for someone whose legs draw together. Privacy flaps and accessories complete a system.
Start with an assessment
If someone is sliding out of their chair, leaning persistently, developing pressure areas, or can only tolerate sitting for short periods, that is the point to ask for a seating assessment rather than to buy another cushion.
Bring the therapist's recommendation and we will supply, fit and adjust. We also handle the funding paperwork, including ADP, which covers positioning devices for eligible Ontario residents.
