Feather Heavy Duty Wheelchair 24"
A 24 inch wide wheelchair rated to 450 lbs that weighs just 23 lbs, or 16 lbs with the rear wheels removed.
Why this one
450 lbs at 23 lbs
A 24 inch seat rated to 450 lbs on a frame weighing 23 lbs, where comparable bariatric chairs typically weigh 40 to 60 lbs.
16 lbs without wheels
The rear wheels pop off, bringing what you actually lift down to around 16 lbs, less than many folding walkers.
Compact fold
The backrest folds down as well as the frame, packing to roughly 12 by 32 by 32 inches for an ordinary car boot.
Self-propel or push
Full size rear wheels with handrims mean the user can propel themselves, not only be pushed, which a true transport chair does not allow.
Easier to push
Ergonomic push handles and a light frame mean a caregiver pushes with noticeably less effort than a conventional bariatric chair.
Swing-away footrests
Footrests swing away and detach completely, clearing the front of the chair for standing and sliding transfers.
24 inch seat width
A 24 inch seat gives room for a broader user, where a narrower chair causes pressure at the hips and restricts posture.
Anti-tipper option
Anti-tippers are available as an option, worth considering on any chair used on slopes or by an active self-propelling user.
About this product
Heavy duty wheelchairs are usually heavy. A 24 inch wide frame rated to 450 lbs would normally weigh 40 to 60 lbs, which puts it beyond what most people can lift into a car and effectively ties the user to whoever can manage it. The Feather HD weighs 23 lbs.
That is the entire point of this chair. Pop the rear wheels off and what you actually lift is about 16 lbs, less than many folding walkers. The back folds down as well, and the whole thing packs to roughly 12 by 32 by 32 inches, so an ordinary car boot takes it without a struggle.
Wide and strong, without the weight
The 24 inch seat and 450 lb capacity are the reason to choose this over a standard width chair. Someone who is pinched at the hips in an 18 inch seat sits properly here, and the frame is rated for it. What is unusual is not having to accept a heavy chair as the price of that.
Self propelled or pushed
Unlike a true transport chair, this one has full size rear wheels with handrims, so the user can propel themselves as well as being pushed. Ergonomic push handles make it manageable for a caregiver, and the light frame means pushing takes noticeably less effort than a conventional bariatric chair. Footrests swing away and detach completely for transfers, and anti-tippers are available as an option.
Ordering
Supplied in matte black. Seat width should be measured rather than estimated, so come into the showroom if you are unsure and we will fit it properly.
