Fall Mat 2.0
A low profile bedside fall mat that cushions a fall, often safer than a rail for someone who climbs.
Why this one
Accepts the fall may happen
Cushions the landing rather than trying to keep someone in bed, which suits anyone who climbs over rails.
Better than a rail for some
Often safer than a rail for someone with dementia, who may climb a rail and fall from a greater height.
Deliberately low profile
Three quarters of an inch thick, low enough not to become a trip hazard or unbalance someone stepping on it.
Full bed length
At 72 inches it runs the length of the bed, covering the whole area someone might land in.
Keep it flat
Check it lies flat without curling at the edges, since a curled edge is what catches a foot.
About this product
A fall mat lies on the floor beside the bed and cushions a fall. This one is 72 by 24 inches and three quarters of an inch thick.
When a mat is better than a rail
Bed rails seem like the obvious answer to someone falling out of bed, and for some people they are. For others they make things worse.
A person who is confused, or determined to get up, will climb over a rail rather than call for help. Falling from the top of a raised rail is a longer fall onto the same floor. Rails also carry an entrapment risk for anyone who cannot free themselves.
A fall mat takes the opposite approach. It does not try to keep the person in bed. It accepts that they may get out, or roll out, and reduces the injury when they land.
For someone with dementia, or anyone who has already tried to climb a rail, that is usually the safer choice.
Why thin matters
At three quarters of an inch this mat is deliberately low profile. A thick mat cushions better but becomes a trip hazard in itself, and someone standing on an unstable soft surface beside their bed is at more risk, not less.
Low profile is a compromise, and a deliberate one: enough to absorb impact, not enough to unbalance someone stepping onto it.
Practical points
It runs the length of the bed at 72 inches, so it covers the whole area someone might land in rather than one spot.
Check it lies flat without curling at the edges, since a curled edge is exactly what catches a foot. Wipe clean between uses.
