Features & Benefits

Why this one

Easier to stand up

Raises the whole bed so the person starts from closer to standing height, with less work for the legs.

Easier to sit down

Also makes sitting down easier, since there is less of a drop onto the mattress.

For weak legs and knees

Suits weak quadriceps, arthritic knees, and recovery from hip or knee surgery.

Set to the person

Aim for feet flat on the floor and knees at a right angle when sitting on the edge, not maximum height.

Check stability

Check all four are fully seated and the bed does not rock, since a bed shifting as someone stands is dangerous.

Re-check your rails

Raising the bed changes how any fitted rails sit, so re-check rail height and gaps afterwards.

About this product

A set of four risers that lift the legs of a bed, raising the whole bed to a height that suits the person.

Height matters in bed as much as anywhere

Standing up from a low bed is the same movement as standing from a low chair or a low toilet: the knees start higher than the hips and the person has to push themselves up from a deep position.

Raising the bed a few inches means they start from closer to standing height, so the legs have less work to do. For someone with weak quadriceps, arthritic knees, or recovering from hip or knee surgery, that can be the difference between getting up alone and needing help.

Sitting down is easier too, since there is less of a drop onto the mattress.

Getting the height right

Aim for the person to sit on the edge of the bed with their feet flat on the floor and knees at roughly a right angle. That is the same rule as for a chair.

Do not simply raise it as far as the risers allow. A bed that is too high means the feet dangle when sitting on the edge, which makes standing less stable, and getting into bed becomes a climb.

Check the fit and the stability

Risers must match the bed leg. A leg that does not sit properly in the cup can slip out, and a bed shifting under someone as they stand is dangerous.

Check all four are seated fully, that the bed does not rock, and that the frame is not being twisted. Re-check periodically, particularly after the bed has been moved for cleaning.

Also consider

Raising the bed changes how bed rails sit, so if rails are fitted their height and gaps should be re-checked afterwards.
