Accessibility Projects
Tub to shower conversions, tub cutouts, door widening, patio door conversions and handrails, surveyed and installed.
Some accessibility problems cannot be solved with a product. A bathroom door two inches too narrow, a bathtub that cannot be climbed into, a patio door that slides instead of opening wide: these need the house changed rather than something bought.
We survey, quote and carry out that work across the Greater Toronto Area.
What we do
Tub to shower conversions. Removing a bathtub and replacing it with a level or low-threshold shower. This is the single most transformative change in most homes, because the tub wall is usually the first thing that becomes impossible.
Tub cutouts. A section of the tub wall is cut away and sealed, giving a low step-through without replacing the whole bathroom. Considerably cheaper and quicker than a full conversion, and often enough.
Roll-in shower conversions. A fully level entry for someone using a wheelchair or shower commode chair.
Door widening. Bathroom doors in particular are often too narrow for a wheelchair. Widening the opening, or changing to a different door type, is frequently all that stands between someone and their own bathroom.
Patio door conversions. Replacing a sliding door with double hinged doors, which open wider and are far easier to operate from a seated position.
Handrails and grab bar installation, fixed into structure rather than drywall.
Stairlift installation, surveyed and fitted by our own team. See stairlifts for pricing.
Toilet conversions, including standard to elongated, where height and reach are the problem.
Why it is worth doing properly
Accessibility work goes wrong when it is done by a general contractor who has not watched someone actually transfer. The grab bar ends up where the tile was easy rather than where the hand needs it. The shower threshold is level but the floor falls the wrong way. The door is widened but the handle is still unreachable.
We supply the equipment that goes into these rooms every day, which means we know how the space will be used before we start cutting.
Funding
This is exactly what the March of Dimes Home & Vehicle Modification Program exists for: up to $15,000 lifetime for home modifications, with an occupational therapist assessment. Ramps, lifts, roll-in showers, door widening and grab bars are all eligible.
ODSP, WSIB and Veterans Affairs may also apply. We handle these applications every day.
