Program overview
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides temporary health coverage to individuals in Canada who are not eligible for provincial or territorial health insurance. This includes resettled refugees, refugee claimants, protected persons, and certain other vulnerable groups. IFHP covers essential medical services such as physician and hospital care, prescription medications, dental and vision care for children, mental health services, and one immigration medical exam. Designed to ensure that newcomers and those awaiting permanent residency have access to necessary healthcare, the IFHP serves as a crucial support system during their transition to long-term health coverage in Canada.
Eligibility
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides temporary health coverage to certain groups in Canada who are not eligible for provincial or territorial health insurance. This includes resettled refugees, refugee claimants, protected persons in Canada, and certain other groups. The IFHP covers basic and supplemental health services, prescription medications, and one immigration medical exam. Eligibility is restricted to those who do not have access to other health insurance plans.
Supplemental Coverage
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) offers supplemental coverage that goes beyond basic healthcare services to address additional needs of eligible individuals. This supplemental coverage includes essential prescription medications, limited vision care, urgent dental care, and mobility aids like walkers or crutches. The goal is to ensure that vulnerable populations, such as refugees and asylum seekers, receive comprehensive support for their health needs, even if they do not have access to other forms of health insurance in Canada.
